ChatGPT

A general-purpose assistant for chat, research, coding, files, images, voice and end-to-end knowledge work.

ChatGPT is the product. GPT-6 Sol powers paid plans and GPT-6 Luna powers Free/Go tiers. GPT-6 Astra has a separate Aivorix model dossier. A model listing does not establish access on every ChatGPT plan.

01 / OVERVIEW

What ChatGPT is today

ChatGPT began as a free research preview built on GPT-3.5 and has grown into a multi-tool workspace rather than a text-only chatbot.

The GPT-6 family separates flagship professional quality (Sol) and fast low-cost conversational work (Luna). Intelligent UI allows responses to dynamically render interactive visual elements directly in chat.

Reading note

Product features and underlying models are documented separately. Roadmap items include only provider-announced work; rumors are excluded.

02 / RELEASE HISTORY

Major versions and what changed

Selected milestones that materially changed the product.

5 milestones
Current

GPT-6 family rollout & Intelligent UI

OpenAI transitioned ChatGPT tiers to GPT-6 Sol and Luna, adding native interactive UI rendering and Dots persistent agents.

  • GPT-6 Sol default for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise
  • GPT-6 Luna default for Free and Go
  • Intelligent UI: dynamic charts, calculators and forms in chat
  • Dots background agents on Astra; Pro 500 tier launched
Official release note
Milestone

ChatGPT research preview

OpenAI released the conversational GPT-3.5 experience to collect feedback.

  • Follow-up conversation
  • Mistake acknowledgement
  • Instruction following and refusal behavior
Official release note
Milestone

GPT-4 to GPT-4o

ChatGPT added stronger reasoning, then moved toward a natively multimodal, faster experience across text, vision and voice.

  • Stronger complex reasoning
  • Image understanding
  • Faster multimodal interaction
  • Broader free access
Official release note
Milestone

GPT-5 generation

A unified system combined fast responses with deeper reasoning and improved instruction following, coding and factual reliability.

  • Automatic routing between fast and thinking modes
  • Lower factual-error rates
  • Improved coding and health responses
Official release note
Milestone

GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna

The family added durable capability tiers, configurable effort, stronger agent work and improved price-performance.

  • Programmatic tool calling
  • Multi-agent beta and ultra mode
  • Stronger computer use and design judgment
  • Lower Terra/Luna API pricing

03 / THEN VS NOW

GPT-5.5 vs GPT-5.6 Sol

The comparison uses provider-published capabilities and named evaluations, not a generic marketing score.

04 / POWER EVIDENCE

No honest single 'times more powerful' number exists.

Capability changes by task. The fairest published comparison is benchmark-by-benchmark; adoption or token volume is not treated as intelligence.

05 / FEATURES EXPLAINED

How the important features work

What happens behind the button, where it helps and what to verify.

01

Deep research

Plan and region dependent

How it works: Plans a research path, searches multiple sources, reads them and produces a cited synthesis instead of relying only on model memory.

Best use: Market scans, literature reviews and evidence-heavy questions

Watch: Always open the cited sources; a citation can still be incomplete or misinterpreted.

02

Data and file analysis

Upload limits vary by plan

How it works: Parses documents or tables and can use a code-execution environment to calculate, transform and visualize data.

Best use: PDF review, spreadsheets, charts and structured extraction

Watch: Check formulas, units and sampled rows before using results operationally.

03

GPT-5.6 effort controls

Controls vary across Chat, Work, Codex and API

How it works: Higher effort allocates more reasoning and, at the top end, can coordinate multiple workstreams; lower effort prioritizes speed.

Best use: Matching response cost and latency to task difficulty

04

Voice and vision

Plan, platform and usage limits vary

How it works: Accepts speech and images as context and returns conversational or visual assistance through supported clients.

Best use: Hands-free help, visual inspection and accessibility

Watch: Do not treat visual or voice output as a substitute for expert inspection in high-stakes cases.

LIMITS

What the headline features do not guarantee

  • Model, tool and usage availability differs between ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API.
  • Even cited or tool-assisted answers can contain errors; high-stakes claims need source-level verification.
  • A higher reasoning setting usually increases latency and resource use; it is unnecessary for simple tasks.
